The short version: a .gov address is a verified ID badge for public agencies. It makes it easy to confirm that a website or email really comes from us, and much harder for anyone to impersonate us.

A verified government address
Reserved for United States government organizations at every level: cities, counties, tribal nations, school districts, and state agencies. Ours identifies us as local Oregon government.
What a .gov address actually means
Anyone can buy a .com or .org address. Nobody checks who they are. That is why scammers can register a lookalike website in an afternoon and send email that appears to come from a school.
A .gov address works differently. It is only granted to verified government organizations in the United States, and the request has to be authorized by a senior official of that organization. It is not a marketing choice. It is an identity check.
Local public agencies across Oregon use .gov addresses for exactly this reason: your city hall, your county clerk, your public library, your local school district. LBLESD now joins them.
A .gov address does not change who governs us. LBLESD is governed by a locally elected board and serves the communities of Linn, Benton, and Lincoln counties. That has not changed, and it does not change.

Common questions
Is LBLESD now part of the federal government?
No. The .gov domain is available to government organizations at every level in the United States, and the large majority of .gov addresses belong to state, local, and tribal governments rather than federal ones. LBLESD remains an Oregon education service district, governed by a locally elected board and accountable to the communities it serves.
Does this change how you handle my family’s information?
No. Our privacy practices and our obligations under state and federal student privacy law are exactly what they were before. Changing a web address does not change what we collect, what we keep, or how we protect it.
Do I need to do anything?
No. Your old bookmarks and links will forward to the new address automatically. If you have saved email addresses for LBLESD staff, you may wish to update them to end in @lblesd.gov, though mail to the old addresses will still reach us during the transition.
How do I know an email really came from LBLESD?
Look for an address ending in @lblesd.gov. Be cautious of lookalike addresses such as lblesd-gov.com. We will never ask you for passwords, payment, or personal information by email or text message. If something looks wrong, do not click, and contact us directly using a phone number or address you already know.
